New to racing?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before coming along to Caldicot RC Racers — when we race, what you need, how race nights work, and how to get started.

Race night Friday evenings

Racing usually starts from around 5:30pm.

Cars 1/10 Electric Off Road

2WD and 4WD classes, subject to numbers.

Experience Beginners welcome

We try to group newer drivers with similar ability racers.

Membership BRCA required

All racers need current BRCA membership.

When do you race?

We race every Friday night, with a short break between Christmas and New Year. Racing usually starts from around 5:30pm.

What cars do you race?

We race 1/10 electric off road cars. This includes brands such as Associated, TLR, Yokomo, Schumacher and others.

We normally run both 2WD and 4WD classes, subject to sufficient numbers.

What tyres are best?

At present, the most popular rear tyres are Schumacher Cactus U6838.

Front tyres are usually Schumacher Low Profile Cut Staggers U6770 for 2WD, or Schumacher Fusion 2 U6895 for 4WD.

We don’t sell tyres ourselves, but Colin from L&L Models is normally in attendance with a selection of tyres, inserts and wheels.

What motor limit is there?

There is currently no fixed motor limit, although with only a 25m straight we recommend nothing too extreme.

Depending on experience, a 13.5T or 10.5T motor is a good place to start.

What batteries can I use?

You can use any 7.4v LiPo battery as long as it is hard cased.

Batteries must be charged safely in a LiPo bag, in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Do I need to have raced before?

No. Beginners are very welcome. We try to accommodate every ability and will place newer racers with other beginners wherever possible.

How does racing work?

We normally run 4 rounds of qualifying, followed by a final for everyone.

You can read more about the race-night structure here: Caldicot RC Racers race format.

Do I need to marshal?

Yes. You should always marshal straight after your heat, even if you did not race.

Please make sure you are at one of the orange cones before the next race starts. Don’t forget your hi-vis and gloves.

Do I have to be a BRCA member?

Yes. We are affiliated to the BRCA and require all racers to be members.

You can find membership details on the BRCA website.

How are my laps counted?

We use AMB/MyLaps timing equipment, compatible with the vast majority of AMB, MyLaps and MRT personal transponders.

We do not currently have handout transponders. You can run without one, but you won’t be able to track your lap times.

Please note: MyLaps RC4 3-wire transponders are not currently supported.
